Qualitative vs Quantitative Modes of Inquiry
QUALITATIVE INQUIRY
1.) Goals of Research: Description and explanation of past and present social phenomena
2.) Plans of Attack: Generally inductive(no initial hypothesis is essential, themes arouse progressively)
3.) Settings for projects: Essential to study; contain phenomenon of concern and interest.
4.) Roles of researchers: Indispensable to study.
5.) Intended use of results: Results explain phenomenon for particular settings. No urge to make generalisations.
QUANTITATIVE INQUIRY
1.) Goals of Research: Explanation, prediction or control of observable events that involve specific variables
2.) Plans of Attack: Generally deductive(initial hypothesis is essential)
3.) Settings for projects: Important to study; contain variables of concern and interest.
4.) Roles of researchers: Detached from study. The more detached the better results.
5.) Intended use of results: Results sometimes generalised to other settings.
